`But, there are no studies to show how it acted against diabetes' A two-pronged strategy to treat diabetes is to combine homeopathic pills with regular anti-diabetes drugs.

CHENNAI: International studies have shown that taking homeopathic pills along with allopathic drugs can be an effective treatment for non-insulin dependent diabetes.

Normalising blood sugar levels have been documented in such patients, who have developed complications, according to a Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital study.

The study showed that in 84 per cent of 100 non-insulin dependent diabetics, , in the age group of 42 to 62, the blood sugar level had come down to normal after supplementing allopathic drugs with homeopathy.

In 65 per cent of the cases that were followed up, the sugar level continued to be normal in 32 per cent and 33 per cent needed drugs to restore normal levels, according

to Mukesh Batra, homeopath and chairman and managing director, Dr. Batra's Positive Health Clinic.

97 p.c. showed improvement

A Greek study in the late 80's indicated that 97 per cent of patients who undergo oral anti-diabetic treatment and homeopathy showed improvement. Dr. Batra also admitted that there were no studies to show how exactly the homeopathic pills acted against diabetes. "Homeopathy stimulates the body's own immune and defence system to initial the healing process," he said, adding that it will not work with Type 1 diabetics, or those who are insulin dependent, and that homeopathy alone cannot be the treatment for diabetes.

Launch of third clinic

With the World Health Organisation projecting alarming rise in the incidence of diabetes in the future, it is essential that every system of medicine gears itself up to meet the challenges, Dr. Batra added. Hewas addressing presspersons on the occasion of the launch of Dr. Batra's third clinic in Chennai on Tuesday.

The Anna Nagar clinic, inaugurated by director P. Vasu and Dr. Batra, will primarily focus on diabetes over and above the other healthcare needs of the residents.
