Those who get postings and promotions in universities owing to political influence try to repay the favour

MANGALORE: The menace of corruption has percolated into universities in the State, R.N. Srinivas Gowda, Vice-Chancellor of the Karnataka Veterinary and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, said here on Tuesday.

He was addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the silver jubilee celebrations of the alumni association of the College of Fisheries.

Mr. Gowda said corruption has struck deep roots in government departments.

In recent years, owing to political interference in the functioning of universities, corruption has entered even universities, he added.

Those who get postings and promotions in universities owing to political influence try to repay the favour.

"Where are we headed? It is a shame on our part," he said.

Mr. Gowda said education should not only focus on building careers but also aim at moulding students as good citizens.

Marine products

R.P. Kotekar, a member of the university's Board of Management, said that though there is a law to conserve marine products in the country it is not being implemented properly.

He noted that earlier, fishermen would not go fishing during the early monsoon (June and July) as they knew that it was the breeding time for fish. This helped prevent shortage of fish, he said

Impact

But this practice has stopped, which can have an adverse impact on the environment and also lead to a shortage of fish.

He demanded that police take action against those who fish during the early monsoon.

D.V. Sadananda Gowda, MP, inaugurated the silver-jubilee celebrations of the association.

Vani Ramachandra, widow of the late R.N. Ramachandra, founder of the association, was felicitated on the occasion.
