THIS IS HOW IT WORKS: The Principal General Manager, Dakshina Kannada Telecom District, T.N. Sudhindra Kumar (left), explaining the working of DataOne service of BSNL to the MP D.V. Sadananda Gowda and the MLA N. Yogish Bhat (second from right) in M angalore on Tuesday.
MANGALORE: While the telecommunication revolution has shrunk distances and ushered in an information explosion, its benefits are limited to urban areas. Public utilities such as the Department of Telecommunication should not be city-centric in their approach towards development, but ensure that such facilities reach rural areas as well, said D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Mangalore MP. Launching DataOne, the broadband service of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. as part of the World Telecom Day here on Tuesday, the MP said elected representatives have a duty to support public utilities to ensure that the fruits of development reach all. Mr. Gowda said there is still a waiting list for telephone connections in places such as Siribagilu and Kenjaru. Even the wireless in local loop (WLL) technology has not proved effective in the hilly terrain of Puttur and Sullia taluks. He urged the telecom authorities to overcome technical hitches and provide telephone connections to these areas as well. He advised them to deal with the issue legally and said that a base terminal station for mobile services at Panja is yet to be commissioned although the equipment had arrived.
Online bill enquiry
N. Yogish Bhat, MLA, who launched the bill enquiry system, lauded BSNL for the twin initiatives. Making a presentation on the new initiatives of the department, Mr. Sudhindra Kumar said DataOne has been implemented in Mangalore under the Rs. 2,000-crore National Internet Backbone II initiative to provide an exclusive and highly secure bandwidth data network. The investment under this initiative in Mangalore is Rs. 2.88 crores, he said. While BSNL can provide DataOne services to 6,000 customers in the district during the year, the installed equipment capacity is for 10,000 connections. The department expects these broadband services to be popular, he said. It will be rolled out in all leading towns in Mangalore and Udupi taluks initially and extended to other taluk headquarters in a phased manner. On the bill enquiry facility, he said the latest telephone bills along with call details for all exchanges of the telecom district are available. It can be accessed on www.mangalore.bsnl.co.in. Printouts of bills can be produced for making payment at customer service centres. K.M. Shetty, Deputy General Manager, welcomed the gathering. Surendra Shenoy, Deputy General Manager, proposed a vote of thanks.
