Roping in banks

This is with reference to a letter by a reader in these columns of The Hindu dated May 4.

He voiced his views in alleviating the plight of pensioners for personal appearance in the treasury annually.

Banks can ensure the survival of any individual, leave alone pensioners, who can draw money through banks.

Banks, which interact with the Government in many transactions, are competent enough to certify the survival of the pensioners.

Will the authorities concerned consider this mode?

Kudos to officials

Kudos to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board employees and officials of other government departments.

They worked on a war footing to restore power supply and other essential services on May 12 when a squall hit the city on May 12.

Luckily, there was no loss of human lives.

Unethical practice

A bank was pulled up for not having issued an additional chequebook, specifically requested by its customer by Chennai north consumer court. The chequebook was intended to fulfil the requirement of a loan availed by the same customer from another bank. It has become customary for a lender to obtain undated cheques for the amounts of equity monthly instalments to ensure regular repayment of further instalments.

Unwittingly, the banker issuing the chequebook has become a party in the event of non-payment of instalment amount by dishonouring cheques, owing to non-availability of fund in his account. It seems an unethical practice resorted by the lenders.

Noise pollution

Whenever fairs are conducted in the Tamukkam Grounds, recorded songs and advertisement tapes are played at a very high pitch. This is the case at the Chithirai exhibition too, which is under way. The high volume of the sound through the speakers causes a lot of disturbance not only to the visitors, but also to the people living in the surroundings. The authorities should end it.

Undue delay

I have been advised by the BSNL to switch over to the WLL service, owing to intermittent failure of landline phone connection in Sri Venkatachalapathy Nagar coming under the Thuvariman Exchange.

I surrendered the phone and I applied for a fixed WLL phone connection. The authorities gave me a tiny WLL mobile stating that the fixed WLL phone was out of stock and the tiny WLL mobile would be replaced as soon as a fresh stock arrived. As a senior citizen, I am unable to use the tiny kit. The BSNL should not delay any more.
