CHENNAI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will slash the price of its broadband service following the recent cut in the tariff of international gateway bandwidth, according to G. Selvam, General Manager of Chennai Telephones. The prices will come down and there will be more takers for the services, he told a meeting organised by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Chennai centre, to mark the World Telecommunication Day. The cut in the international gateway bandwidth had seen a drop in the prices of leased line circuits of the BSNL, he said, pointing out that broadband services were being offered at almost all the exchanges of the Chennai Telephones. Even the few remaining exchanges would begin offering the services within three weeks. Noting that 16,000 broadband connections had been given by the Chennai Telephones since the launch of the service on Pongal day this year, he said BSNL had created capacity to provide 40,000 connections. This would be further expanded to meet its target of one-lakh connections in the current financial year. Chennai Telephones, he said, would be adding new services on the broadband platform, including video streaming. Led by the Chairman of the Institution, V. Appakutty, the speakers, including the Chief General Manager of Southern Telecom Region of BSNL, K. Balakrishnan, underlined the need to bridge the digital divide. Since information spurs economic growth and promises societal equity, there was a need for equitable distribution of information. Mr. Balakrishnan said the focus should be on commercialising the existing telecom technologies rather than on developing frontier technologies. M.S. Ravichandran, Chief Technical Officer of Bharti Infotel Limited, said the telecom engineers should demystify the technology for the masses.
