KOCHI: Over 20,000 students who passed the higher secondary examination in Ernakulam district this year are looking for admission to degree courses in colleges in the city, which, however, offer only 5,000 seats. The admission process will start soon. With not many higher education opportunities in the district, only a section of the students will be able to get admission for regular courses in colleges. The number of aspirants for admission has registered an increase this year. Last year, the pass percentage in Ernakulam in the Plus Two examination was 63.84. This year, it went up to 67.64. Most of the seats are in conventional courses. The conventional B.A courses offered include those in English, economics, sociology, history, Malayalam and psychology. The B.Sc. programmes offered are in mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology and home science.
Job-oriented courses
Job-oriented degree courses are also showcased in the offer list for students. Over 500 seats are available in colleges here under the self-financing scheme initiated by Mahatma Gandhi University. Maharajas College offers B.Sc. courses in instrumentation and environmental science. There are 30 seats each in both these programmes. St. Teresa's College offers B.A. programmes in communicative English, French and Bharatanatyam. The college also offers a degree programme in computer applications. The Women Studies Centre offers job-oriented programmes such as fashion designing, clinical nutrition and dietetics. Sacred Heart College, Thevara, offers B.Sc. courses in computer applications and industrial chemistry. St. Albert's College offers B.Sc. programmes in fisheries, vocational chemistry and aquaculture. Bharata Mata College, Trikkakara, offers career-oriented courses such as B.Com. (travel and tourism), B.A. Malayalam (with main focus on journalism) and B.Sc. physics (computer applications as a main area of study).
