BANGALORE: A panel discussion held at Oxford Bookstore here on Monday dwelt on the theme "Is radio relevant today?" The bookstore, housed at Leela Galleria, has in the past organised several events that give people a chance to discuss relevant issues with experts from the field. The discussion saw five eminent panellists sharing their views with a small but participative audience. C.U. Bellaki, Assistant Director, All India Radio and head of Radio FM, said that in a country where 35 per cent of the people do not have access to mass media, radio provides a cheap and easy source of information and entertainment. "Radio is the base of any media; most media forms are an offshoot of radio," said Vasuki, Bureau Chief, ANI. With the 21st Century becoming the age of the Internet and television, the Indian radio industry is undergoing huge changes with new radio licences being issued and new channels being set up. An important aspect of this revolution is that the audience profile is changing as well. It is a misconception that the new media will displace the old. The discussion pointed out that AIR has become the most reliable and widely accessed radio station in India. Radio provides information and entertainment that caters to all age groups and economic categories.
