NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old woman has been arrested by the North-West Delhi police on the charge of duping innocent housewives in the guise of organising kitty parties. The police said the accused, Ranjana Sachar, a resident of 205 Sangam Apartments in Rohini, had along with her husband, Sumit Sachar -- who is absconding -- floated a company, Invitation India Marketing Private Limited, three years ago. Initially, the police said, they monitored the business from their house but later they opened their office at Vikas Tower at Sector 8 in Rohini. The company allegedly lured housewives to join organising kitties with them for one year on a monthly subscription of Rs 1,000 and promised that a lucky draw for each kitty will be held every month and household articles worth Rs 12,000 will be given to the winner, who will also be exempted from paying the remaining instalments. The company also promised household articles one year after maturity to those members who did not win the draw, but failed to keep its word. The matter came to light when Preeti Kapoor, a resident of 2/98 Sunder Vihar, Paschim Vihar, reported to the police on May 16 that she had taken two kitties with the company and that though one had matured in November 2004, the company was yet to give her articles or money despite repeated requests. As over 20 such complaints had been received against the company, the police arrested Ranjana Sachar, who is one of the directors, while her husband, also a director, managed to flee. Stating that there were over 1,000 memberships on record as per the seizures made thus far, the police said the operations of the company were quite large.
