BHURBAN (PAKISTAN): Parliamentarians from South Asia have agreed on constitution of an informal forum for "information sharing" as a first step towards exploration of establishment of a South Asian Parliament on the lines of European Union. Meeting on the sidelines of a conference "South Asian Parliament: Evolving South Asian Fraternity" organised by South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) the Parliamentary Member delegates discussed possibilities of and ways and means for institutionalising and sustaining contacts and cooperation between South Asian Parliamentarians and Parliaments.
Consensus on goal
The general consensus among the delegates while establishment of a South Asian Parliament was a goal that needed to be pursued, it would not prudent to hasten the process without adequate groundwork. Nilotpal Basu CPI(M) MP, who was present at the meeting, told The Hindu that "unless we legitimise whatever mechanism we choose to adopt for institutionalisation of such contacts through Speakers of Parliaments the process can not be sustained".
