MUMBAI: Only the fittest will survive in the Maharashtra police if the State Government's new scheme for policemen comes into force. Policemen and women of all ranks who maintain physical fitness will get a special allowance of Rs. 100-250 a month. But those who do not keep fit will find no place in the force, according to Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil. They may be given other jobs.Mr. Patil said a committee headed by a Secretary would decide the fitness criteria. Under a family health scheme, ailing policemen and women and their families would get quality medical attention even in private hospitals. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said it would cost the exchequer Rs. 7.5 crores and benefit 1.53 lakh personnel.
