Sonia dominated by a caucus, says Karunakaran

Special Correspondent

`It would be difficult for Congress to do well in Assembly polls'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The veteran Congress leader K. Karunakaran on Wednesday alleged that the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, was under the influence of a caucus. As long as she failed to independently evaluate the affairs of the party, the Congress party would find it difficult to make headway in the coming Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Union Territory of Pondicherry, he said while addressing a press conference at his residence.

Reacting to the Congress president's remarks against him, Mr. Karunakaran said he did not believe that Ms. Gandhi would have made such a remark. But if she had indeed done so, then it did not behove of the exalted position she held as the party chief. Besides, the remark vindicates the apprehensions of his and his supporters that a few jobless leaders from the State modulated her responses to party affairs in Kerala. He suspected that Ms. Gandhi made such a remark after her discussions with the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy and the CWC members, A. K. Antony.

In reply to a question on whether her remarks amounted to humiliation, Mr. Karunakaran said: "Every one can understand what it is." He said he would continue to be loyal to the Nehru family. He continued to respect Ms. Gandhi, but this did not mean that he agreed with her positions.

He said that the Congress president should seriously ponder why the party was not able to complete its organisational elections even after he and his supporters left the party. She should also ponder why the Congress took a severe beating in Bihar and Jharkhand, instead of being worried about Karunakaran. The Congress president should ask honest party leaders to study the issues he had raised relating to Kerala. "It is better not to provoke me," he said.

He said the party leadership had refused to agree to his demand for conducting organisational elections. But today, the party was finding it difficult to complete the process even without his opposition.
