PONDICHERRY: The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy today distributed Rs 10,000 under the Pondicherry Family Welfare Assistance scheme to each of 941 families who had lost their main breadwinner. The scheme is being operated by Department of Women and Child Department. The Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, Leader of the opposition R V Janakirman, legislators and chairman of Pondicherry Civil Supplies Corporation (PAPSCO) V. Bhalan were among those present. The Director of the Department Devi Mathews said in a release earlier the department distributed Rs 5,000 to families that lost their main breadwinner because of natural causes and Rs 10,000 if the death occurred because of accident. The ex-gratia payment was revised upward to ensure uniformity. A sum of Rs 1.5 crores had been earmarked in the budget of Pondicherry government for the scheme, she said.
