Girls outshine boys in Plus-Two exam in Pondy

Decline in pass percentage in tsunami-hit areas Five private schools record cent percent pass in the examination

PONDICHERRY: The overall pass percentage registered by schools in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions in the Plus-Two public examinations held in March (result of which was declared today) was 72.02 per cent against 73.28 per cent recorded last year (2003-2004), according to the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy.

He told newsmen here on Wednesday that a total of 8,718 students appeared for the examination in the two regions and 6,279 candidates have come out successful.

Pondicherry and Karaikal regions adopt the Tamil Nadu pattern of curriculum and examination system, as there is presently no separate Education Board here.

He said that while 2,942 out of 4,154 boys who appeared for the examination were successful as many as 3,337 out of 4564 girls had emerged victorious.

Region wise Pondicherry has established a pass record of 72.89 per cent against 67.56 per cent of passes in Karaikal region.

As far as government schools are concerned 1,648 boys out of 2695 boys presented for the examination were triumphant and 2,242 out of 3,346 girls came out successful.

Referring to the number of students presented by private schools in the two regions the Chief Minister said that 1,294 boys out of 1,459 were successful while 1095 out of 1218 girls emerged victorious showing a pass percentage of 64.96 among boys and 69.63 among girls.

Although no government school was able to produce cent percent pass this time five privately managed institutions (Amalorpavam HSS, St Joseph of Cluny Girls HSS, St Patrick HSS, Alpha Matriculation HSS and Lakshmi HSS, all are located in Pondicherry region) have established each a cent percent pass record in the examination.

Rangasamy said that there was a decline in pass percentage in some of the schools in tsunami hit coastal areas like Kalapet, Thavalakuppam (both in Pondicherry) and in Ambagarathur in Karaikal.

Chief Minister said that the Government HSS in Thondamanatham a rural segment has recorded the poorest percentage of passes among the government schools.

S.Nithiya and A.Surekha (both from St Patrick HSS) and P.Venkateshkumar of Petit Seminaire HSS have scored 1177 each (out of 1200) and these candidates are sharing the first rank at the State level here while Anubhav Mohanty and A Suguna (both from St Patrick HSS) are sharing the second rank with a record of 1175 marks each. John Robert of Petit Seminaire HSS has notched the third rank with 1174 marks.

Among students of government schools the top three positions have been notched by P. Sooriyanarayanan of Thanthai Periyar Government HSS at Kovilpathu (Karaikal) who has scored 1160 marks while P.Arun Prakash of the same school and S Lakshmi of Tiruvalluvar Government GHSS at Pondicherry are sharing the second position with 1155 marks each. S. Alagammai alias Alagu of Tiruvalluvar Government GHSS is third ranker with 1152 marks.
