RANK HOLDERS: R. Shobana, C. Sujana, Maria Cheryl Fernandes and S. Shivraj.
CHENNAI: The good news spread quickly despite the jammed phone lines. For toppers of the Higher Secondary Examinations, Wednesday was clearly their day in the sun. Congratulatory phone calls kept pouring in and the cameras did not stop clicking. Success only got sweeter as the day progressed. The top two scores were scored by students of the DAV Higher Secondary School, Gopalpuram. The Good Shepherd Matriculation Girls Higher Secondary School tied with the DAV branch in Mogappair for the third place. While the DAV students had opted for Sanskrit, the Good Shepherd student had taken French. "I was hoping for a triple centum, but didn't expect this," said an elated C. Sujana of DAV HSS, Gopalapuram, between interviews with presspersons. She topped with a total of 1,190. Her classmate, R. Shobana, came second with 1,189. "I was sort of expecting a State rank but when I didn't get a call by 9 a.m., I was a bit disappointed," said Shobana. The phone rang half an hour later. Her father, who works in Sri Lanka, had flown down the previous night in anticipation of good news. "I had faith and I have not been disappointed," Shobana said. "It was a total surprise," said third ranker Maria Cheryl Fernandez from Good Shepherd Matriculation Girls HSS, who scored 1,188. This accomplished pianist also ranked highest in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with centums. She received a warm welcome at school from friends, teachers and presspersons. S. Shivraj from DAV, Mogappair, also scored 1,188. When school officials called C. Anuja's home to inform her family that her twin, Sujana, had topped the board examination, she was happy but she didn't expect similar scores herself. Anuja ranked second with centums in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. With the first three State toppers in Statistics, Advanced Sanskrit and Ayurveda, the first two in Accountancy and a third rank in Commerce, teachers at the Sri Ahobila Math Oriental Higher Secondary School were pleased but not surprised. "We have been producing State rankers in these subjects for almost a decade now," said N.V. Vasudevachariar, Correspondent of the school.
