MADURAI: : It was a repeat performance for Madurai district in the Plus-Two examinations with 85 per cent pass and girls outnumbering boys in the total tally this year. The performance of schools improved with 22 schools registering centum scores, compared to 19 last year. Of the total 22,487 candidates, who appeared for the examinations this year, 19,084 passed in the district with the students of government schools faring better than those in the Corporation and Matriculation schools. The first three ranks went to schools in Madurai city with the topper, N.William Ringal Taube of St.Britto Higher Secondary School, securing 1,173 marks. K.Krithika of S.D.H. Jain Vidyalaya, Tiruppalai, stood second in the district with 1,172 marks while the third spot was bagged by M. Mahalakshmi of Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School who scored 1,169 marks. The District Chief Educational Officer, K.Sridevi, who handed over the tabulated mark lists to the `centum schools', said that the performance remained the same as last year in the district. Of the 11,201 boys who wrote the examinations, 9,232 passed while 9,852 girls passed out of 11,286 girls.
Ms. Sridevi said students from 184 schools in the district wrote the examinations. The performance of all three educational districts Madurai, Melur and Usilampatti remained the same as last year.
Toppers' ambition
The district first ranker, N.William Ringal Taube, and also the second and third toppers were delighted at the result. The common secret for their success was simple: encouragement from the parents/school, and a disciplined approach to studies. "I am on cloud nine. It was the systematic study that made the difference. There were no night studies at all", says K.Krithika, second ranker in the district, who was away in Chennai when the result came to the school. She is now aspiring for entering into a medical college and scored 98.33 per cent (for medical seat) in the recent TNPCEE. In Plus-Two, she scored centum in four main subjects physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. It was an equally brilliant show from district topper, Taube, who is also aiming at a medical college seat and his score in the TNPCEE was 93.75 per cent. "I thank the God and my teachers. Also, the parents' support at home makes a difference for anyone", he says. Taube's father, A. Navaraj, who is a pastor in Church, says proudly that he never knew what were Plus-Two subjects and his son did not have any tuition also. The district third ranker, M.Mahalakshmi, from Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School, with centum in chemistry and biology, is equally delighted. She too wants to be a doctor like the other toppers. Support came from his mother and the success tip she gives is to start preparing from plus one itself. Vikaasa School recorded centum results in the X-ICSE examinations with all students securing first class marks with 90 per cent of the students passing out with distinction. R. Subhashini topped the school scoring 565 marks out of 600 while G. Janani, who emerged top in English with 94 per cent, finished second with 554 marks followed by T. Sowbarnika, who recorded 535 marks.
A city girl student of a corporation school, D. Sathya, secured the second rank in the State in Nursing subject in the Plus-Two examinations. The girl, studying in E. V. R. Nagammai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School on South Veli Street, scored 381 marks out of 400 and stood second in the State.
