V.P. Thirumurthy dies in accident in New Zealand

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: V.P. Thirumurthy, Director of the VST Group, died in a road accident in New Zealand in the early hours of Wednesday, according to family sources. He was holidaying in New Zealand with his wife Suchitra and two daughters.

Eight persons, including Thirumurthy, Suchitra, and daughter Ahalaya (20), were killed in the accident.

Urmila (18), another daughter of Mr. Thirumurthy, suffered head injuries and is in a critical condition in a Hamilton hospital. All four were travelling in a van, which was hit head-on by a log-laden truck. The accident reportedly occurred on State Highway 27 at Matamata near Morinsville. Heavy rain reportedly made the road slippery, causing the accident.

Mr. Thirumurthy is the son of the late V.T. Padmanabhan, and hails from one of the oldest business families of Bangalore. He was a director of Metro Ford. He was past president of Bangalore Club and an active squash player.
