BANGALORE: The Lokayukta police on Wednesday caught the Shivajinagar Sub-Registrar while he was allegedly accepting Rs. 10,000 for delivering a document. A person, said to be an "agent" in his office, was caught with Rs. 1.68 lakhs in cash, which included four covers in the name of four higher officials in the Stamps and Registration Department. The Lokayukta police team, led by the Superintendent of Police, G. Ramesh, caught T.C. Nagaraj, Sub-Registrar of the Shivajinagar, in his office at Domlur, while Basavaraj, the agent, was allegedly giving him money on Wednesday evening.
Advocate's complaint
According to a complainant received by the Lokayukta office from Ikramulla Khan, an advocate, Mr. Nagaraj had demanded Rs. 14,000 for giving a document regarding a property of his client registered a week ago. "He wanted 0.5 per cent cut in the value of the property. He settled for Rs. 10,000," Mr. Khan told the Lokayukta, N. Venkatachala, when the accused were produced before him in his office. When Mr. Venkatachala asked Mr. Basavaraj why he carried Rs. 1.5 lakhs, the latter told him it was meant for taking lease of a property for himself, which he was planning in two days. On why he carried four different covers, Mr. Basavaraj said he found them near the toilet and "I just kept it in my pocket." The four covers, which had Rs. 18,000 in all, were addressed to the Deputy Inspector-General (Vigilance), the Deputy Inspector-General (Audit), the DIG (Administration), and the Headquarters Assistant. Mr. Basavaraj, who pleaded ignorance, told the Lokayukta that he had taken it to get a copy of the document required by Mr. Khan's client. "Action will not only be taken against these two, but against the officials mentioned on the covers, if it is found true," Mr. Venkatachala said. The Lokayukta police have registered a case. under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
