For undergraduate and postgraduate teachers, here is an opportunity to keep themselves updated on the developments in their respective fields of teaching. The UGC-Academic Staff College attached to the Bangalore University has organised all-India level orientation programmes and refresher courses for 2005-06. The programmes will be open to regular PG and UG teachers and temporary and contract lecturers, who have been teaching for two academic sessions continuously in the colleges affiliated to the Bangalore University. The refresher courses are in English; Kannada; Studies in Ancient Indian Languages such as Sanskrit, Hindi and Urdu; Gandhian Philosophy and Women Studies; Mathematics; Life Sciences including Botany, Zoology, Sericulture and Biochemistry; Legal Studies; Business Studies including Commerce, Economics and Management; Computer Science; History; Studies in Social Harmony including Sociology, Political Science and Master of Social Works; Education Technology including Education, Physical Education and Psychology; Physics; Chemistry; Dravidian Languages including Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam; Biotechnology including Botany, Zoology, Microbiology and Genetics; Environmental Science including Geography, Geology and Environmental Science; Library and Information Science including Communication and Electronic Media. Ph. D admissions
The prescribed application forms along with the prospectus can be obtained from the office of the consultant and director R & D, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, 4th T block, Jayanagar, Bangalore 41, on payment of Rs. 1,000 in the form of a demand draft drawn in favour of Registrar, RGUHS, Bangalore. The forms will be available till May 31. The forms should be filled and submitted along with the testimonials to the University registrar on or before June 6.
Chinese visit
They met the University Vice-Chancellor, M.S. Thimmappa, and members of the University Syndicate and discussed ways and means to collaborate in the areas of software engineering and information technology for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The Syndicate approved a draft agreement for Bangalore University's affiliation of the Bachelors and Masters in Engineering in IT and software engineering, currently being conducted by the Indian Institute of Software Engineering in Sichuan, China.
Insurance seminar
N.M. Govardhan, former LIC Chairman, in his keynote address, gave a picture of the convergence of marketing, servicing and use of information technology in the insurance industry. Mr. Govardhan traced the development of insurance in the free economy and its importance to society and the industry. The University Vice-Chancellor, M.S. Thimmappa, emphasised the need for application of knowledge in the working of the industry and how Bangalore University is committed to equip students to come up to the expectations of the industry. Representatives from about 30 insurance companies participated in the seminar and assured students of training and placement in their companies.
