dated May 20, 1955: Kabul rejects Pak. offer

Kabul Radio has described as useless the recent offer made by Major-General Iskander Mirza, Pakistan's Interior Minister, to accept the Durand Line as the frontier between Afghanistan and Pakistan and re-establish friendship between the two countries. The radio said in a broadcast: "The Durand Line does not exist. It disappeared with the Britishers. General Mirza has spoken in his statement about a territory which does not belong to Pakistan." Describing as useless the Pakistani Minister's suggestion to Kabul to abstain from interfering in the internal affairs of his country, the radio said, "If championing the cause of Pakhtoons means interference, it will continue till we reach the goal.'' In the course of the broadcast, the radio advised General Mirza "not to distort facts or confuse world opinion, but face the reality." Concluding its broadcast on the Durand Line, the radio addressed the Pakistan Interior Minister in these words: "General Mirza, just realise that Afghanistan's views on the Durand Line are known everywhere to everybody. The Britishers have gone and the Durand Line agreement has gone away with them."
