Injured innocence?

This refers to the response of the Embassy of Japan (May 18) to The Hindu 's editorial "Japan backs off the indefensible" (April 23). On reading the history of Japan's occupation of Korea and China and the horrible massacre its troops committed, it is difficult to accept the Japanese logic of injured innocence.

Unlike Germans, who have never hesitated to introspect about the horrors of their Nazi past, the Japanese have not been able to reconcile with their colonial past. As long as they continue to adopt a reluctant attitude, the civilised world will not consider any protest from the Chinese or the Koreans unfair or misconceived.
