The AIADMK victory in the by-elections of Gummidipoondi and Kancheepuram shows nothing but good governance pays. It was the mid-course correction undertaken by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa that helped her party win.
Kochi, Kerala
If the victory is an endorsement of Ms. Jayalalithaa's populist policies as many argue, it could spell misfortune for the State in the long run. The Congress, which came to power in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra riding the populist wave, is finding the going tough and having to reverse many of its decisions.
The BJP sought to capitalise on the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharyas to promote its Hindutva agenda. But the people of Tamil Nadu have proved that they have the ability to differentiate piety from politics. The AIADMK's victory in Kancheepuram is a slap in the face for the BJP.
The AIADMK win in Kancheepuram has nothing to do with the handling of the Sankararaman murder case by the Government. The arrest of the seers was not an election issue. To term the verdict a vindication of the State Government's action in the case is wrong.
The verdict should serve as an eye-opener to the seven-party Democratic Progressive Alliance, which relied on the arithmetic of tie-ups and caste equations. It disregarded the fact that people also consider the government's performance before voting.
