Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Even as there appears to be no end for reports on dwindling numbers of tigers in different parts of the country, the Science and Technology Minister, Kapil Sibal on Thursday told presspersons that an initiative on the part of his Ministry to help tackle the problem.

The initiative would primarily be in the form of helping to conserve the genetic diversity of the tiger population.

Under the programme, scientists would map the genetic profile of each and every tiger in the country and if in any reserve forest there was any evidence of inbreeding, genetic diversity would be restored by introducing genes collected from tigers from other parts of the country.

The programme would be implemented by scientists at the CSIR's Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) at Hyderabad in collaboration with the staff of the reserve forests.

The programme was based on the DNA fingerprinting technique through which the genetic profile of any animal could be worked out using just their faecal matter.
