Special Correspondent
HUBLI: Pralhad Joshi, BJP MP from Dharwad North, has said that his party will hold a dharna in front of the houses of the three Ministers from Dharwad district in the N. Dharam Singh Ministry as a protest against the continued unsatisfactory drinking water supply in the twin cities. Mr. Joshi told presspersons here on Thursday that there had been no improvement in the situation from the time the Chief Minister visited Dharwad last month and had pulled up the officials concerned for the laxity in water supply arrangement. Except for digging some borewells nothing had happened.
Powers
The only development had been that the officials of the water board had been delegated powers to spend money for implementing the work, he said. Mr. Joshi said that though the district had three nominees in the Ministry, Jabbar Khan Honnalli, S.R. Morey (both Congress) and Basavaraj Horatti (Janata Dal-S), none of them had evinced interest in the water supply problem. Mr. Morey and Mr. Honnalli, who attended the review meeting presided over by the Chief Minister, did not open their mouths and Mr. Horatti was absent, Mr. Joshi said. All of them had failed to act in unison to bring relief to the people, he said. It was also wrong that the Government had not been thinking in terms of taking long-term measures to mitigate the problem, he said. Mr. Joshi took exception to the action being taken by Hubli Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM) authorities who were booking cases against people in rural areas for running mini flourmills in their residences. According to Mr. Joshi, three-phase power supply in rural areas was available only in night as a result of which one of the flourmills worked during the day. To get over the problem faced by housewives, many villagers had installed mini flourmills in their houses for meeting the day-to-day domestic needs. The flourmills installed were capable of running with single-phase power supply. HESCOM authorities had swooped down on the villages and had started registering cases. This was causing hardship to the people. He demanded that the cases booked be rescinded immediately.
