3.56 lakh hectares to come under sowing

BELLARY: The Agriculture Department has set 3.56 lakh hectares as the sowing target in Bellary district for the current kharif season.

Of the proposed target of 3.56 lakh hectares, 1.65 lakh hectares is irrigated and the rest is rain-fed. The department said sowing of foodgrains will be taken up in 2.20 lakh hectares, oilseeds 1.10 lakh hectares and commercial crops in 25,000 lakh hectares, B.R. Shankar, Joint Director of Agriculture, said.

Giving the break-up of crop-wise sowing, Mr. Shankar said cereals are expected to be sown in 1.92 lakh hectares (paddy in 47,476 hectares, jowar in 48,528 hectares, ragi in 6,937 hectares, maize in 53,789 hectares and bajra in 23,669 hectares). Pulses will be sown in 28,032 hectares (tur in 13,372 hectares, horse gram in 7,659 hectares, green gram in 3,998 hectares and cowpea in 2,512 hectares). Groundnut to be sowed in 54,364 hectares and sunflower to be sowed in 48,443 hectares are the major oilseeds to be cultivated in the district.
