Police plan to initiate steps against traffic violators

Staff Reporter

DHARMAPURI: To streamline the vehicular traffic especially the entry of heavy vehicles within town limits during the day, the district police have called for a stringent action in diverting all heavy vehicles from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

With the by-pass road having narrowed down due to the setting up of numerous business establishments on either side the entry of such heavy vehicles has only turned out to be a nightmare for two-wheelers and pedestrians. Also all buses proceeding to Salem use the road resulting in frequent traffic snarls and congestion.

According to the Superintendent of Police, H.M. Jayaram, "Following the traffic regulation lorries will now be diverted through the Adhiyamankottai Road near the Collector's bungalow so that they could get connected to NH 7 at Old Dharmapuri or proceed to Hosur via Palacode and Rayakottai."

Though police personnel were present at both the Adhiyamankottai Junction and the Old Dharmapuri Road, lorry drivers frequently indulged in heated exchanges with the policemen when their vehicles were diverted, he said.

The lorries were also parked on the road resulting in frequent traffic congestion after 10 p.m. After a meeting with lorry drivers it has now been decided to allow lorries within town limits from 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, the district police are also exploring the possibility of setting up automatic signals within town limits to regulate the heavy flow of traffic. Separate parking bays for two-wheelers and four-wheelers have also been arranged within town limits. The district police have warned that strict action would be taken against those who violate the regulation causing traffic congestion and inconvenience to motorists.
