SRIKAKULAM: Senior Telugu Desam Party leader and Srikakulam MP, Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu, on Thursday charged the Congress Government with `betraying farmers', pointing out that in its one-year rule as many as 2,609 farmers had committed suicide and 279 weavers had died of starvation. Speaking to newsmen here, Mr. Naidu recalled how, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, as an Opposition leader, promised the `moon' to farmers but miserably failed on all fronts. Citing specific example, Mr. Naidu recalled how Dr. Reddy promised to revive the Sugar Factory at Amadalalvalasa. The TDP wanted the factory to be privatised. But Dr. Reddy, during his election campaign, promised to revive it. Farmers believed his promise and voted for the Congress, but as a Chief Minister, Dr. Reddy betrayed the farmers. Whether it was revival of Bhavanapadu fishing harbour or sanction of drip irrigation units, Dr. Reddy was guilty of breaking his promises, Mr. Naidu said. So far no repairs had been taken up to the Left Canal of Vamsadhara project and Mr. Naidu was doubtful whether water would be available for the ensuing season of the crop. In the last one year, the Chief Minister visited Srikakulam district four times, it was some thing of a privilege to the district, but nothing concrete came out of his four visits. He had just come and gone. The Government had failed to solve even drinking water problem. Referring to the scheduled rythu chaitanya sadassu, to be addressed by the Chief Minister, at Nira on Friday, Mr. Naidu said "farmers, for that matter people of the State are sensitive and conscious of all aspects, it was the Government which is needed to be sensitised to the pressing problems of the people, specially farmers."
Statistics
Reeling out statistics to show the achievements of the TDP regime, Mr. Naidu said "hospitals have no doctors, schools have no teachers, villagers have no drinking water and labourers have no work and not even a single project is grounded, it is failures all the way." It was because of these failures and the possible backlash that the Government is not holding elections to the municipalities. It was however trying to capture all civic bodies by resorting to partyless and indirect elections, Mr. Naidu alleged.
