THANJAVUR: Work on the Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project-Package II is in progress in the coastal areas of Thanjavur district.

The World Bank-funded project to lay a coastal road connecting Nagapattinam to Tuticorin will prove a boon to the Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts by providing a world-class road that will spur tourism and also provide connectivity.

According to Highways Department engineers, Package II involves laying 116.6 km of roads from Panangudi near Nagapattinam to Kattumavadi village in Thanjavur district along the Palk Strait.

The work involves the construction of three by-passes. The first will be laid from Nagore bridge and join the Nagapattinam-Thiruthuraipoondi road at Papakovil. The second will start from Kokkaladi village on the Nagapattinam-Thiruthuraipoondi road and join the Thiruthuraipoondi-Muthupettai road at Nedumbalam. The third will start at Alankadu village on the Mayiladuthurai-Muthupettai road and join Duraikadu village on the Muthupettai-Adhirampattinam road. The work is divided into four sections. The first is from Manora to Kattumavadi and second from Muthupettai in Thanjavur district to Manora in Tiruvarur district. The third section is from Muthupettai to Thiruthuraipoondi and the fourth from Thiruthuraipoondi to Nagapattinam.

Work on the first and second sections has begun. Widening of the road and patchwork is being carried out between Manora and Kattumavadi and Manora and Muthupettai. Land acquisition is in progress for the third and fourth sections.

The work is being implemented by two global contractors — IRCON International and Sumber Mitra Jaya and supervised by Sheladia Associates Inc.
