Memorable day for Sujith and Sphoorti

BANGALORE: Top seed Sujith Sachidanand survived a first set scare to register a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over the second seed Preetam Roy Mores in the boys' under-16 singles event of the Malleswaram Association's Platinum Jubilee AITA Talent Series junior tennis championship here on Thursday.

Sujith, who made his second successive final, struggled to find his rhythm in the first set as Mores, attacking strongly at the net, broke him repeatedly to take the set. The second set witnessed long baseline rallies as the two traded breaks. Sujith, holding his serve after a testing time in the ninth game, broke his rival after two deuces with a sizzling crosscourt return and clinched the set.

In the decider Mores caved in without any resistance as Sujith came up with consistent returns.

Sujith went on to complete a double with Mores as his partner. The Karnataka duo defeated Vinod Gowda (Karnataka) and S.S. Prithvi (Tamil Nadu) 6-1, 6-3. Karnataka's Sphoorti Biradar's sparkling display saw her claim the girls' under-14 and under-16 crowns. The girl from Dharwad beat sixth-seeded Nimisha Mohan 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the under-16 final. She defeated Sharon Paul of Tamil Nadu 7-5, 6-2 in the under-14 event.

The results (all finals): Boys: Under-16 singles: Sujith Sachidanand (Kar) bt Preetam Roy Mores (Kar) 1-6, 6-4, 6-1; Doubles: Sujith Sachidanand/Preetam Roy Mores bt Vinod Gowda (Kar)/S.S. Prithvi (Kar) 6-1, 6-3. Under-14 singles: Yeshwanth Nadella (AP) bt S. Siddarth (TN) 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Girls: Under-16 singles: Sphoorti Biradar (Kar) bt Nimisha Mohan (Kar) 2-6, 6-2, 6-4; Doubles: Nimisha Mohan/Spoorti Shivlingaiah (Kar) bt Sphoorti Biradar/Shreya Shivalingaiah (Kar) 10-5. Under-14 singles: Sphoorti Biradar bt Sharon Paul (TN) 7-5, 6-2.
