Vijaya Bank defeats Army

Correspondent

PERIAKULAM: Vijaya Bank (Bangalore) registered an impressive 60-42 victory over defending champion Indian Army (Delhi) in the semifinal league of the 46th Chidambara Sourya Narayanan Trophy all-India basketball tournament here on Thursday.

For Vijaya Bank, Srinivasa Gowda, ball handler Rony Zachariah and Roshan Thangachan forged a good combination. It made a rousing start and built up a 19-point cushion (40-21) at half-time. Though the Army team tried hard to come back into the match, the wide margin couldn't be bridged.

The results (semifinal league): Vijaya Bank 60 (Srinivasa Gowda 20, Rony Zachariah 20, Roshan Thangachan 14) bt Indian Army 42 (Phool Singh 12, Vijayakumar 11).

Quarterfinals: Army 75 (Phool Singh 12, Jairam Jet 14, Arokia Babu 18) bt Western Railway 58 (Prakash Mithra 17, Ragul 14); Indian Navy (Lonavala) 67 (Faizal 10, A.P. Singh 12, Hassbe 13, Settu 15) bt KSEB 54 (Bobid Mathew 12, Radhakrishnan Nair 10).
