KANNUR: The former Chief Minister and the late Communist leader, E.K. Nayanar, was remembered on his first death anniversary here on Thursday.

CPI(M) leaders paid floral tributes to the late leader at the newly-erected memorial column at Payyambalam in the morning.

Among those present were the CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan; the MLAs, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan; M.V. Govindan; P.K. Sreemathi; M.V. Jayarajan; A.P. Abdullakutty, MP, and the District Panchayat president, O.V. Narayanan. Nayanar's family members, including his wife Sharada Teacher, offered tributes at the memorial. Speaking at a function at Payyambalam, Mr. Vijayan said that Nayanar was a compassionate leader who had always thought about assuaging the plight of the poor.

A rally and public function was held at Kallyassery, E.K. Nayanar's home village, in the evening.
