SHIMOGA: There is a steep fall in the assets and liabilities of S. Bangarappa, former Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party candidate in Shimoga Lok Sabha Constituency. According to his declaration of assets, Mr. Bangarappa has Rs. 3 lakhs in cash in his name, Rs. 5 lakhs in the name of his wife, Shakuntala, and jewellery estimated to Rs. 2,90,000. He owns 19 guntas of land estimated at Rs. 2,500 in his native village of Kubatoor in Sorab taluk of Shimoga district. His wife owns lands under different survey numbers at Malalagaon in Sirsi taluk of Uttara Kannada district measuring 14.25 acres estimated at Rs. 40,800. Mr. Bangarappa owns a Rs. 1-lakh farmhouse at his native village. In 2004 when Mr. Bangarappa declared his assets while filing nomination for the Lok Sabha elections, he showed that he owned 83.56 acres of land estimated at Rs. 7.99 lakhs in his native village as the agricultural land, property estimated at Rs. 2.97 crores at the RMV Extension in Bangalore. He had also declared that he owned property estimated at Rs. 1.26 lakhs in HRS Layout in Bangalore, estimated at Rs. 5.67 lakhs in Shimoga, 350 grams of gold and 4 kg. silver, all estimated Rs. 2.90 lakhs and Rs. 5 lakhs in cash apart from shares and debentures worth Rs. 2.25 lakhs.
Seven in fray
With the withdrawal of nomination papers by the independent candidates, B.J. Nagaraj and Annadani Shobha, seven candidates are in the fray for the Lok Sabha byelection from the Shimoga constituency. Today was the last day for withdrawal of the nomination papers. The candidates who are in the fray are: S. Bangarappa (Samajawadi Party), Ayanur Manjunath (Congress), M.B. Bhanu Prakash (BJP), L.T. Thimmappa Hegde (Janata Dal-S), Shivalingaswamy (Janata Party), Satyanarayana (Janata Dal-U) and Bhadre Shivappa (Independent). Polling will take place on June 2 and the counting of votes on June 5.
