JD(S) meeting tomorrow

HUBLI: The Janata Dal (Secular), Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagar Zilla unit, has called a meeting of office-bearers, activists and the well-wishers of the party at 11 a.m. on May 21 in Hubli.

The meeting is in connection with the convention of the Janata Dal(S) in Hubli on June 3, according to a release. — Staff Reporter

Contract labourers stage protest

Bhadravati: The Sugar Factory (MPM) Contract Labourers Association on Wednesday staged a protest here against the management demanding that the labourers may be given full-time work. The association members said of the 340 contract labourers, 178 are facing hardship. They have been fighting for their cause since 20 years but the management has not responded to their plight. The association president, N.L. Siddartha, the vice-president, Raju, and the secretary, P.C. Swamy, led the protestors. — Correspondent

Sirsi: The following were elected presidents of the various units of the Uttara Kannada District Samajwadi Party, according to a press release from the district unit president, Bheemanna Naik.

They are: Sudha Gowda, women's unit; Anand Gowda, Sirsi taluk rural unit; Hanumant Marya Naik, Siddapur taluk urban unit; V.M. Bhat Honnegundi, Siddapur unit rural taluk; Manjunath D. Four arrested

Dharwad: The Dharwad Police have arrested four persons on the charge of stealing vehicles and have seized three vehicles from them.

The police said Mahammad Faruq Mahmad Ranebennur, Muzbin Shoukat Ali Torgal, S.M. Chetan and Srinivas, residents of M.B. Nagar in Dharwad, used to steal vehicles and then sell their spares. A case has been registered at the Town Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

Liquor seized

Hubli: The officials of the Excise Department conducted raids on various liquor dens in Hubli on Wednesday and seized illicit liquor estimated at Rs. 10,000. Three persons have been arrested in this connection. — Staff Correspondent

No sale of meat on Monday

MYSORE: There will be no sale of meat in the city on Monday on account of Buddha Purnima.

According to a press statement from the Mysore City Corporation, all slaughterhouses and meat shops have been directed to remain closed on Monday. — Staff Correspondent.

Uma Rao for U.S.

MYSORE: Former professor of Kalakshetra, Chennai, Uma Rao, has left for the U.S. for a two-month tour.

Ms. Rao, who is also the founder-director of Lalithakala Academy Foundation Trust, will conduct a short-term advanced course and choreography classes in Bharatanatyam in Florida, according to a press release from the trust. — Staff Correspondent.

Formal inauguration of naval base on May 31

KARWAR: Karwar Naval Base will be dedicated to the nation on May 31 as per the rescheduled programme, according to sources at the base. The Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, and the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance and Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, are expected to participate in the programme. The programme was originally scheduled to take place on May 9. — Correspondent

Siddaramaiah

in Bijapur

BIJAPUR: The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, who arrived here on Thursday afternoon, is scheduled to participate in a public grievances meeting at Tikota, 20 km from here, on Friday. Later, he will participate in a public meeting there being organised by the district unit of the Janata Dal (S). According to a party press release, the former Prime Minister H.D. Couple die in accident near Dharwad

DHARWAD: A couple was killed in a collision involving a car and a truck near Venkatapur in Garag police station limits here on Thursday. The police said Vasupal Jinigowda, 40, and his wife, Anupama, 30, residents of Belgaum, were killed on the spot. The accident occurred around 1.30 p.m. on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway. — Staff Correspondent

`Straight fight between JD(S), Bangarappa'

BIJAPUR: The Minister for Animal Husbandry and Wakf, Mirajuddin Patel, said here on Thursday that it will be a straight fight between the Janata Dal (S) to which he belongs and the former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa in the Shimoga Lok Sabha byelection.

Talking to presspersons, he ridiculed the statement made by the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, B. Janardhana Poojary, that the JD(S) is not in the reckoning in the Shimoga byelection. The Congress will be relegated to the third position and the BJP is not at all in race, he said. The vice-president of party's State unit, Riyaz Faruqui, and district unit chief, Mallikarjun Yandigeri, were present. — Staff Correspondent

Be prepared for polls, BJP workers told

HUBLI: Jagadish Shettar, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State unit, on Wednesday called upon party workers to be prepared for elections. Inaugurating a convention of the party's new office-bearers of the Hubli city unit and workers, Mr. Shettar said that the Congress-Janata Dal (S) coalition Government in the State is likely to collapse at any time.

Prahlad Joshi, MP, said that creating awareness among the general public on what he called the failures of the State Government has become necessary, and the BJP should take the course of agitation. — Staff Correspondent

Karnataka College alumni association

DHARWAD: The alumni association of Karnataka College, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in north Karnataka, has come into existence. Anil Gokak, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Satya Sai Higher Education Centre, inaugurated the association recently.

The office-bearers of the association are C.S. Kaddipudi (president), D.N. Kulkarni (vice-president), Veena Shanteshwar (working president), R.L. Jadar (secretary) and Amrut Yardi (treasurer).

School secures good results

BELLARY: Sandur Girls' Residential School at Vyasanakere in Hospet taluk has recorded cent per cent passes in the 10th standard ICSE examination. This is the 11th time that all the students of the school have passed.

While all the girls have got a first class, 44 per cent of them have passed with distinction.

S.K. Padmini stands first in the school by securing 87 per cent marks followed by Roopa Hosmani (85 per cent) and Radhika (80 per cent). — Staff Correspondent

`Withdraw ban on sale of stamp papers'

Bidar: The Aurad Taluk Stamp Vendors' Association has demanded that the ban on sale of stamp papers by vendors be withdrawn immediately.

"The ban has made us jobless and pushed some of us into penury. If it continues, stamp vendors will outnumber farmers in committing suicides," the association president, Shankar Rao, said in a memorandum to the Registrar of Stamps. — Staff Correspondent

School sought

Bidar: The people of S.M. Krishna Nagar, an Ashraya housing colony at Jamistanpur in Bidar taluk, have demanded that a government primary and high school be set up in their area.

There are over 100 children in the colony who are forced to walk to a government school four km away. Starting a school in the colony will not help the students, but will also encourage more children to go to school, said Baburao, Inzamam and other members of the Chandrashekar Azad Association in a memorandum to the Government. — Staff Correspondent

Appeal to Dharam Singh

Bidar: The Bidar Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to take up development of tourism in the district.

Proposals for the comprehensive development of all urban areas in the district with assistance from the Asian Development Bank are pending before the Government. They should be cleared and development works taken up immediately, the president of the chambers, B.G. Shetkar, said in a letter to Mr. Singh. — Staff Correspondent

Girl abandoned

BANGALORE: A 10-year-old girl was found abandoned on a footpath near Chamrajpet. She was rescued by the Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Koota, a coordinating agency of Childline (1098) following information given by a pedestrian. The child was taken to Vani Vilas Hospital for a medical check up. She was found to be in good health. — Staff Reporter

Music contest

BANGALORE: All India Radio is organising a music competition for discovering and encouraging young talent. The preliminaries will be held at each station of AIR, including Bangalore, and the categories include vocal, instrumental and chorus and in Carantic, Hindustani and light/folk music genres. The competition is open to those aged between 16 and 24 as on June 1 and the preliminaries will be held from August 16 to 30. — Staff Reporter

Kalotsava-2005

TUMKUR: P. Muniswamy, Superintendent of Police, will kickstart the two-day Kalotsava-2005, the annual sports and cultural fest of Sri Siddhartha Institute of Technology (SSIT), here on Friday.

Extra coach

BANGALORE: The South-Western Railway (SWR) has added a second class sleeper coach to Yeshwanthpur-Rajendranagar-Yeshwanthpur Sanghamitra bi-weekly Express from May 5 to June 30 for the train leaving here and up to July 2 for the train in reverse direction.

According to a press release here on Wednesday, the train will have two two-tier AC coaches, and two three-tier AC coaches. — Staff Reporter

SSLC topper

BHADRAVATI: H.M. Shruti of the Poorna Prajna English Medium School here has emerged top scorer in SSLC in Bhadravati taluk and has bagged the second place in Shimoga district by scoring 97.12 per cent.

She has scored 100 in Mathematics, 124 out of 150 in Sanskrit, 98 in Science, 99 in Social Sciences, 94 in Kannada and 92 in English. — Staff Correspondent
