Punjab launches computer education in schools

Staff Correspondent

Over 13 lakh students in Government schools to benefit from integrated project

CHANDIGARH: To impart computer education in State-run schools, the Punjab Government has begun implementation of the Integrated Computer Technology (ICT) project in 1,299 upper primary schools, which have more than 7.5 lakh students. While it would spend Rs. 40 crores every year on this project, another 1,000 schools are expected to be added from this academic year.

Quoting the Director General (DG) for school education, Anurag Aggarwal, an official release said under this centrally sponsored computer literacy programme, about 13.2 lakh students from Class VI to Class XII, in 5422 upper primary schools, would be imparted computer education based on guidelines of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

After seven years of computer education, the State Government is hopeful that the students would acquire sufficient competence to write programmes in advanced languages such as C++. The prestigious ICT project also envisages a Computer Aided Learning (CAL) programme, which would provide interactive multimedia CDs, making learning a joyful experience.

Mr. Aggarwal stressed that this project would not only bridge the divide between the students of privately managed institutions and government schools, but it would also help enhance the teaching-learning process, which would increase enrolment and check the drop-out rate in the latter as well.

The State Government had constituted an ICT Education Society under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary for independent monitoring and supervision of the implementation of the project, he added. The State Government also has a tie-up with American India Foundation (AIF) which would provide 30 quality inspectors free of cost as well as free infrastructure in seven schools in Faridkot district.
