KURNOOL: The State President of the United Backward Classes Front, V.G.R. Naragoni, alleged that the Congress Government was neglecting BCs while filling up nominated posts. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said the APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, promised 60 per cent of DCC posts to the BCs but not even 40 per cent was allotted to them in effect. Mr. Naragoni said the BCs accounted for 52 per cent of the population and therefore, 150 MLAs should be from these communities, but only 49 were elected. According to him, 78 communities were yet to send their representatives to the State Assembly. Twenty-eight communities had no permanent place of living and moved from place to place, resembling nomads. Fifty-seven communities still practised traditional professions and there was no improvement in their status since the British period. He blamed the political parties and successive Governments for the pitiable condition of the BCs in the State. The representation of BCs in educational, administrative and political areas was nominal. The BCs had overwhelmingly supported the Congress Government, but it downsized the scholarships to Rs 300 crores from Rs 500 crores earlier. Mr. Naragoni urged the Government to disburse the package for BCs announced recently through the Backward Class Corporation instead of banks. The BC Front launched a statewide campaign to bring awareness among BCs from April 14 to May 30.
