THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, said on Thursday that none of the UDF constituents and factions that had left the Front had given him requests so far to sit as separate blocks in the Assembly. Addressing a press conference here, the Speaker said that he had also not received any petition for disqualification of members over defection. The law did not provide for suo motto action by the Speaker in this regard. Moreover, attendance of meetings or rallies could not be presumed to be defection unless a serious intent or action is proved.
Next session
He had suggested that the next Assembly session, proposed to be held in June, be postponed to July. If the session were held in June, the next session would have to be held in December, as the House has to meet once in six months. Then, the House might not be able to meet well in advance of the general elections for the Governor's Address. Mr. Ramakrishnan said that the Legislature intended to invite the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, for unveiling of statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharalal Nehru and B. R. Ambedkar before the Assembly complex sometime in July this year. The work on the statues by Tamil Nadu based sculptors was over and the statues were expected to be delivered before the end of this month. The work on the pedestals for erecting the statues is in progress, he said.
