KSKTU leaders call off fast

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union (KSKTU) called off its nine-day-old indefinite fast before the Secretariat here on Thursday evening following the State Government's assurance that one instalment of the agricultural workers' pension arrears would be paid immediately and its various other demands considered with seriousness.

The CPI(M) Thiruvananthapuram district secretary, M. Vijaya Kumar, gave lime juice to the four fasting activists of the KSKTU to mark the end of the agitation.

The KSKTU leaders on fast were B. Raghavan, H.A. Sharaf, C. Unni and Kalliyur Sreedharan.

Earlier in the day, the KSKTU leaders had held protracted negotiation with the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, and the Minister for Labour, Babu Divakaran.

The Minister for Finance, Vakkom B. Purushothaman, was also actively involved in the talks on Wednesday.
