BSNL offer

MALAPPURAM: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) will re-activate the prepaid sim cards that expired because customers did not recharge in time.

Customers can avail themselves of this facility till June 30, said the Telecom General Manager in a statement here on Wednesday. But the cards expired before six months cannot be reactivated. — Staff Reporter

Homage to Nayanar

KANNUR: The former Chief Minister and the late Communist leader, E.K. Nayanar, was remembered on his first death anniversary here on Thursday.

CPI(M) leaders paid floral tributes to the late leader at the newly-erected memorial column at Payyambalam in the morning.

Man killed as waves destroy boat

THRISSUR: A man died and another person was injured when their fishing boat was damaged by surging waves near the Azhimukham off the Munakkakadvu coast in the district on Thursday. The police gave the name of the deceased as Francis, 51, of Poonthura near Thiruvanathapuram and that of the injured as Yesudasan, 48. Mr. Yesudasan has been admitted to a private hospital at Engandiyur. The third occupant of the boat escaped unhurt. — Staff Reporter

Strike by transport workers

THRISSUR: Transport workers in the State will go on an indefinite strike from midnight on June 13 to press for their various demands, including amendment of the Motor Vehicles Act in their favour and inclusion of all workers in the Welfare Board schemes. According to a release received here on Thursday, the decision to go on strike was taken by the Road Transport Workers Coordination Committee. — Staff Reporter

Hospitalised

KOZHIKODE: C. Balan, district joint secretary, Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union (KSKTU) and C.M. Babu, KSKTU area joint secretary, who were on an indefinite fast along with other KSKTU leaders before the district Collectorate, were admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on Thursday evening after they developed uneasiness. The KSKTU leaders are on a fast to press their demands, including disbursements of farm workers pension. — Staff Reporter

Hearing for power consumers

KANNUR: Rishiraj Singh, Inspector-General (Vigilance and Security), Kerala State Electricity Board, will hold a hearing being organised by the Kannur Electrical Circle Office here from 4 p.m. on Saturday.

A Board press release here on Wednesday said Mr. Singh would hear and receive complaints from electricity consumers at the hearing. The venue is Thavakkara Upper Primary School. — Staff Reporter

Youth festival

KASARAGOD: A three-day district youth festival under the aegis of the Democratic Youth Federation of India will get under way at the Karadukka Government Higher Secondary School from tomorrow. About 1,500 participants from different parts of the district will compete in the festival. The district panchayat president, E. Padmavathy, will inaugurate the meet in the morning and the Kasaragod MP, P. Karunakaran, will inaugurate the cultural conference to be held in the evening. — Staff Reporter

Attacked

KASARAGOD: The police have registered a case against 17 activists of the IUML for obstructing policemen from discharging their duty. The case is that the IUML workers attacked the policemen at Aarangadi near Kanhangad near here late on Wednesday night when they were trying to arrest some persons suspected to have taken part in a clash between IUML and INL supporters there few days ago. Meanwhile, four INL activists have moved the District and Sessions court for anticipatory bail in another INL-IUML clash that occurred at Eriyadi a couple of days ago. — Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD: Cherakalam Abdulla, MLA, will inaugurate five new roads, constructed with the aid of Nabard in Manjeswaram block panchayat, at a function on May 21.

100 per cent pass

PALAKKAD: The Bharathamatha Higher Secondary School, Chandranagar, has achieved 100 per cent results in the Higher Secondary School Examinations, 2005. — Staff Reporter

Recitation contest

KOLLAM: The Kollam District Library Council will organise recitation competitions at all the 525 libraries in the district. At a press conference here on Thursday, the office-bearers of the council, Puthur Somarajan, D. Sukesan and K.P. Nandakumar, said that recitation competitions will also be conducted at the taluk and district levels and the aim was to popularise reading habit in the younger generation.

Cultural programmes will be conducted in each taluk to commemorate the cultural leaders of the respective taluks.

Man dead

KOLLAM: A man found lying unconscious in front of the Kollam Railway Station, who was rushed to the District Hospital by policemen attached to the Kollam East Police Station, died soon afterwards. The man is yet to be identified. The police said that the deceased was likely to be around 60 years and suspect him to hail from Tirunellveli district in Tamil Nadu. The body has been kept at the mortuary of the district hospital. — Staff Reporter

Mahila Morcha meet

KOTTAYAM: A State-level conference of Bharathiya Mahila Morcha will commence at Changanasssery on Friday. Rema Raghunandan, president of the State unit of the Morcha, told presspersons here on Thursday that the conference would be inaugurated by the former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj.
