Ministers give go-by to meeting by DPCC chief

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Differences between the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, and the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ram Babu Sharma, seem to be taking their toll on important party functions too.

Distancing themselves from the working of the party, the Ministers of the Sheila Dikshit Cabinet, with the sole exception of the Health Minister, Yoganand Shastri, Members of Parliament and loyalist MLAs once again stayed away from a meeting called on Thursday to discuss preparations for former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's death anniversary on May 21.

However, Mr. Sharma's warning of taking a serious view of the continued absence from the party functions last time round had its effect with 28 MLAs attending the meeting on Thursday. Only eight MLAs were present at the last meeting. Many Delhi Ministers stayed away from the meeting despite invitations and reminders on the telephone.

The Chief Minister could not attend the meeting as she is away in Switzerland on an official tour. Political observers feel that the very fact that a majority of the MLAs who stayed away from the meeting included loyalist MLAs is indicative that the Sheila Dikshit camp has decided to take on the DPCC president head on. While Congressmen are going out of their way to mobilise support for the programmes to be organised to mark the death anniversary of their leader, the Congress-led Government in the Capital has shown little interest in lending a helping hand to the party. The lack of cooperation or non-participation on part of the Government for the programme meant to mark Rajiv Gandhi's death anniversary is something that has not gone unnoticed by many within the party as well in the leadership.

Stating that he had asked every one to join hands to make the function a big success, Mr. Sharma said he would submit a list of all those MLAs and partymen who had failed to turn up for the meetings to discuss the programme.

"Nobody should try and politicise such a solemn occasion of such a great leader. We will make the function a big success irrespective of who all come or not,'' he added.

Earlier talking to newsmen, Mr. Sharma said the venue of the function had been changed to Talkatora Indoor Stadium due to heat wave conditions in the Capital. He said he expected to collect around 1,000 units of blood on May 21. All the Members of Parliament from Delhi, AICC general secretaries, secretaries and a large number of Union Ministers had been invited on the occasion.
