`Needs better deal': The State general secretary of the National Anganwadi Employees Union, A. Rahimkutty, inaugurating a dharna by anganawadi workers in front of Kottarakara taluk office on Thursday.
KOLLAM: The State general secretary of the National Anganwadi Employees Union, A. Rahimkutty, has called upon the State Government to revise the wages and service terms of `anganawadi' workers. He was inaugurating a dharna by `anganawadi' workers in front of the Kottarakara taluk office on Thursday. The taluk office dharna is a prelude to the district-level and Secretariat marches planned by the union. The State Government should implement a pay scale for anganawadi workers on the model implemented by Pondicherry Government, he said.
Paltry wages
He said that there were more than 55,000 `anganawadi' workers in the State and that they should be recognised as Class 1V employees. Successive Governments had ignored the problems and demands of the workers. They had been working for paltry wages without any retirement benefits, he said. Following strong agitations spearheaded by the union, the Government had appointed a Commission headed by the Director of the Social Welfare Department. It had submitted its report five months ago recommending revision of wages and service norms. However, there was no move by the Government to implement the recommendations, he said. The union leaders Nellikunnam Sulochana, Kulathupuzha Renuka, Saramma Thankachan and T. Ambika Devi addressed the gathering.
