U P Women's Commission joins issue on `talaq'

BALRAMPUR: (U P): Joining issue with the All-India Muslim Women's Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB), a senior member of the Uttar Pradesh Women's Commission on Thursday contended that a marriage cannot be annulled if a man utters `talaq' thrice in a row under the influence of liquor.

``There cannot be a `talaq' if someone utters it thrice in one go under the influence of liquor, or, if his mental condition is not sound,'' UPWC member, Shahin Fatima, told reporters here.

She called for a serious debate on the issue, or else, it would give lead to persecution of Muslim women.

Fatima said 1,361 crimes against women had been reported in Uttar Pradesh from August 2004 to January 2005 of which 317 were related to dowry.

There were 106 dowry deaths, 64 abductions, 41 murders and 102 cases of rape, she said.

Some cases of persecution of men at the hands of women had also come to light and the commission would take strict steps in this regard, Fatima added.- PTI
