SGPC demands ban on screening of film

Staff Correspondent

Demands another review after the amendments

CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has demanded an immediate ban on the screening of the controversial film "Jo Bole So Nihal" till its name is amended and some "objectionable" scenes are withdrawn. The demand was raised at a meeting of SGPC's sub-committee headed by its president, Bibi Jagir Kaur, at Kalgidhar Niwas in Amritsar on Thursday. The sub-committee was constituted under directions of the Akal Takht, whose own committee is said to have given the green signal to the film earlier but due to pressure and protests from some Sikh organisations as well as various factions of the Shiromani Akali Dal had decided to form another committee to review the film, which has already been screened in various cinema houses across the country. The cinema house in Amritsar where the film was running has already stopped its screening.

The sub-committee, which reviewed the film on Thursday, was unanimous in concluding that since the film was conceived in accordance with the basic principles of Sikhism, its name, which is based on the Sikh battle-cry, should be changed immediately and all objectionable scenes be withdrawn.

The committee also demanded another review of then film before it was released again after the amendments. A resolution demanded that at least five experts nominated by the SGPC, which was a "true representative of the Sikhs'', be taken on the films' Censor Board to prevent any future controversy. It also demanded that approval be sought from the SGPC before depicting any Sikh characters or way of life in television serials as well.
