TIRUNELVELI: : The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), along with the Department of Animal Husbandry, will set up an integrated research-cum-training centre at Ramaiyanpatti near here for rearing sheep and goats. Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Vice-Chancellor N. Balaraman, said the centre would supply high-yielding varieties of sheep and goats to farmers, besides providing them free training in rearing. They would also be trained in the cultivation of fodder for these animals. "Since the Department of Animal Husbandry has already got adequate infrastructure at their establishment at Ramaiyanpatti, the task will be easier for the TANUVAS to start the programme within the next six months. To begin with, we plan to rear 500 animals (200 sheep and 300 goats). We have selected `kanni aadu' (a goat variety) and Madras Red," he said. On rearing of ostrich and emu at the Kaattupaakkam research centre near Chennai, he said the university had to conduct more studies on these birds before handing them over to farmers. Since the TANUVAS was facing hurdles in hatching the eggs of these birds, it would import two equipment for artificial hatching.
