Now a new-look park for all

TIRUCHI: Ibrahim Park, one of the oldest (established in 1930), has been thrown open to the public after a facelift.

The Tiruchi Corporation has developed it as a model park, spending about Rs.10 lakhs for putting in place children's amusement equipment, and landscaping. Decorative and colourful fountains, including a "musical water fountain," a picturesque artificial waterfall and a rock garden now adorn the park. The park has been provided with better seating arrangements fitted with fibre-glass umbrellas.

The Mayor, Sarubala R.Tondaiman, on Wednesday, declared open the park, which remained closed for the past several months. The Corporation Commissioner, Harmander Singh, and the Tiruchi-I MLA, B. Bharani Kumar, were also present.

Though the Corporation was planning to hand over the park to a private developer, the move was subsequently given up as the terms of agreement could not be worked out to mutual satisfaction. The civic body has now invited sponsors, preferably public sector undertakings or banks, to take over its maintenance.

The park would be open from 5 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The entry fee would be Rs.2 per head for children and Rs.3 for adults.
