Boats donated to fishermen

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Fisher folk of Akaraikori hamlet near Cuddalore received 19 fiberglass boats from World Vision India, a non-governmental organisation involved in relief and development work.

This is part of the 1,100 boats to be donated by the NGO as part of their tsunami rehabilitation programme.

The village nominated fiver fishermen per boat with each crew receiving an outboard motor and a boat. They will soon receive new nets also.

Each boat crew, according to the NGO, will become a `cooperative,' pooling an agreed percentage of daily weekly profit to invest in a long-term savings account.

Each of these groups includes a woman, who lost her family in tsunami. She will get a share of the profits and also sell the fish caught by the group.
