CHENNAI: : Police have rounded up 18 persons and recovered stolen property worth Rs. 40 lakhs in the last 10 days, R.Nataraj, Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, said on Thursday.

The stolen property included two-wheelers, LPG cylinders, two cars and gold jewellery worth Rs. 8 lakhs.

Mr. Nataraj said Kandeepan of Sri Lanka, residing in Madippakkam, allegedly stole gas cylinders and sold them to fast food eateries in different parts of the city.

He used a stolen two-wheeler to transport the cylinders. Kandeepan would follow delivery boys and remove a cylinder when they went into a house.

51 cylinders

He had stolen 51 cylinders from T.Nagar, Alwarpet, Kottur, Vadapalani, Thousand Lights, Nungambakkam, Teynampet, R.A.Puram, and Shenoy Nagar.

They were sold to eateries in Sholinganallur, Thorappakkam, Karappakkam, Perungudi, Kandhanchavadi, Velachery, Shastry Nagar and Alandur.

He was arrested at the junction of Greams Road and Anderson Road a few days ago, when he attempted to waylay a person, Mr. Nataraj said.

A total of 33 motorcycles were recovered.

Raids on VCD lending libraries in various parts of the city and suburbs on Wednesday resulted in the seizure of 1,540 pirated copies of new Tamil films, including Chandramukhi, Mumbai Xpress and Sachein. Police arrested 13 persons and seized a DVD writer from them, Mr Nataraj said. The Commissioner said police would initiate stringent action against those who put up obscene posters.

On the engineering examinations scam, the Commissioner said investigations had revealed that college managements were not involved in it.
