Answer sheet scam: principals interrogated

Staff Reporter

Heads quizzed on how unused answer sheets were utilised

CHENNAI: The Central Crime Branch police interrogated the principals of five engineering colleges on Thursday.

Principals from SRM Engineering College, Valliammai Engineering College, Tagore Engineering College, Crescent Engineering College and Bharath Engineering College met the Central Crime Branch police authorities.

Police asked them about the number of answer sheets issued by each college and how the unused answer sheets were utilised.

Investigations showed that unused answer sheets from previous examinations were used to replace original answer sheets during the April-May examiantions. The interrogation began around 11.45 a.m. and went on for about two hours, said the Central Crime Branch authorities. The police recorded statements from the principals and they were asked about the involvement of students. However, the principals said they were not aware of the activities of the students.

The Central Crime Branch authorities said a dragnet had been spread for the students who are still at large. One of the students, Srinivasa Rao of SRM Engineering College was associated with a daily wage-worker, Vijayakumar, charged with collecting Rs. 6 lakhs from a section of students. Both were absconding, police said.

The investigators also seized about 25 original answer sheets, which were not removed after inserting a duplicate answer sheet, with the help of daily wage earners of the Anna University.

A few students after inserting the second answer sheet, removed the original ones and allegedly burnt them, police said. In case of a few, they could not do so as the police took up the investigation.
