OPERATION CLEARANCE: Dwellings along the Buckingham Canal at Ranganathapuram near Indira Nagar MRTS station being cleared on Thursday. Photo: M. Srinath
CHENNAI: The operation by Railway authorities to clear huts on the banks of the Buckingham Canal at Ranganathapuram, Adyar, was halted on Thursday due to opposition from the slum dwellers. "The eviction was aimed at taking over the land extending from the footbridge of Indira Nagar Second Avenue to the Link Bridge of West Avenue Road at Thiruvanmiyur for providing a compound wall for the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) property," a Railway official said. The slum dwellers protested when officials from the Railways, the Slum Clearance Board and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority arrived to evict them. Tension prevailed in area in the morning. The slum dwellers said they had been living in Ranganathapuram for nearly four decades. K. Andal, one of the residents, said that they had also been paying water and property tax. "We are ready to vacate the place if given ample time and an alternate site. Previously, 41 families who were evicted were allotted alternate sites as compensation but at present the authorities have declined compensation," another resident, P. Selvam, said. Enquiries with the agencies involved showed that the residents had encroached on Government land. "Only one part of the Government land is being cleared for the MRTS approach roads. On earlier occasions, people had given up the lands they had encroached upon voluntarily on the assurance that the remaining part of their dwellings would not be disturbed," an official said. Noting there was no question of compensation, the official said that the affected persons had been allotted houses in Okkiyam Thoraippam. A month ago, when the authorities wanted to start clearing operations, the residents sought time till the examinations. On Thursday, they wanted one more month. Some 70 families were given tokens for allotment at Okkiyam Thoraipakkam, the official added.
