Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in Minjur, Ramapuram, Pudupet, Park Town, Muthialpet, Mandaveli, Anna Salai, Raj Bhavan, Maduravoyal, Foreshore Estate and Esplanade areas on Saturday.

Contest

The leisure store chain - Odyssey is conducting a general knowledge contest till June 16 at its stores in Adyar, Anna Nagar and East Coast Road. The contest named `Back to School,' will be in a questionnaire format consisting of six questions on general knowledge. Students between Std. IV and Std. XII are eligible to take part in the quiz.

There will be a special display of school bags, lunch boxes, water bottles and lunch bags. Winners will be selected on the basis of their scores in the questionnaire. Students who wish to participate may call: 2440 2264/2440 2265 for registration and details.

Felicitated

Women's Voluntary Service of Tamil Nadu felicitated Mano Bakthavatsalam for her dedicated service to the community on the occasion of her 75th birthday. Sarojini Varadappan, Prema Kasturi, Bhargavi Devendra and Mahalakshmi participated.

Film screening postponed

The Office of Public Affairs at the U.S. Consulate in Chennai has postponed the screening of the film, `The Philadelphia Story,' from May 20 to June 3. On June 3, the film, `The Magnificent Ambersons,' will also be screened along with `The Philadelphia Story.'

The vintage Hollywood films of the 1930s and 1940s, are being shown on alternate Fridays since April 22. The Madras Film Society is co-sponsoring the shows and the films are screened at the Film Chamber Theatre, Gemini Circle.

Programme

Rajalakshmi Engineering College students had a three-day programme to prepare them for campus recruitment. Two HR managers from TCS participated in the inaugural session of the programme and gave their suggestions on getting equipped for placements along with good academic records. S. Ramanathan and K.M. Padmanabhan, management consultants conducted group discussions.

Jewellery, cash stolen

Gold jewellery weighing 13 sovereigns and Rs. 5,000 in cash were stolen from two places in the city in the last couple of days. Police said thieves broke into the house of Ganesan in Alwarpet when the inmates were away and took away jewellery weighing five sovereigns and Rs 5,000 in cash. The incident came to light on Wednesday when the inmates returned. A complaint has been lodged with the Abhiramapuram police.

In the second incident, an unidentified woman entered a house in Seven Wells area and took away jewellery weighing eight sovereigns.

Police said the resident, Habib Raj, had left for work and his wife and child were at home. At around noon, when Mr. Habib's wife went to a nearby shop, the woman entered the house and made away with the jewellery.
