HYDERABAD: K.S. Jawahar Reddy took over as Managing Director of the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Thursday from B.P. Acharya, who has been posted as Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation. Mr. Reddy called on the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, before assuming office at the board's headquarters at Khairatabad. Later, talking to newsmen, Mr. Jawahar Reddy said all efforts would be made to complete the second phase of the Krishna drinking water project in time to ensure that there were no water woes next summer. The Chief Minister, he said, had cautioned him that completion of the Krishna water project was crucial for the twin cities. Mr. Reddy, who was involved in successfully organising South India's biggest river festival, the Godavari Pushkarams, two years ago, described his new assignment as a challenging one, more so as the task involved quenching the thirst of a metropolis like Hyderabad with a staggering 60-lakh populace.
Word of caution
Mr. Acharya had a word of caution for his successor, saying next summer was bound to throw up a lot of water problems if the monsoon failed this year as all the traditional sources had either emptied fully or were on the verge of going dry. Alternative modes of supply, predominantly Krishna water, had to be explored fully. During his term, he had successfully increased the volume of Krishna water supply to the twin cities from 33 Millions Gallons per Day to the present 84 MGD.
