Nayanar remembered

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, today said that the late communist leader E.K. Nayanar would have been in the forefront of agitations against the anti-people policies pursued by the State and Central Governments, had he been alive. Mr. Achuthanandan was speaking at a memorial meeting organised here to mark the first death anniversary of Nayanar.

"If comrade Nayanar was with us, he would have driven home the message to the people in his inimitable and humorous style," he said. Mr. Achuthanandan alleged that the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, was destroying the public sector in the State. "Corruption is rampant and the State exchequer has incurred a loss of around Rs.1,000 crores," Mr. Achuthananthan said. He also criticised the `Smart City' project undertaken by the Government. The former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly M. Vijayakumar, who is also the Thiruvananthapuram district secretary of the CPI(M), said the demise of Nayanar had left a void in the State's political front.

Mr. Vijayakumar said that the Nayanar led-Government was the first in the country to institute a pension scheme for farmers. He had also initiated policies to protect the interests of people working in traditional sectors.
